To say there has been a lot of anticipation for Coldplay's fourth album, Viva La Vida, is an understatement. Having enlisted legendary leftfield producer Brian Eno, borrowed their album title from a painting by renowned Mexican artist Frida Kahlo and made tantalising remarks about sonic reinvention, the world has been curious (to say the least) to hear what the `new' Coldplay might sound like. Viva La Vida definitely makes some departures from the band's usual formula, which happens to be one of the most commercially successful rock-pop blueprints of recent years. The plangent chords, emotive melodies, stadium-rock rhythms and universal lyrical concerns remain, but Martin and co. have gone out on several limbs here, incorporating instrumental tracks ("Life In Technicolour"), using subtle North African and Latin elements ("Yes", "Strawberry Swing"), and overhauling previously strict verse-chorus-verse structures in favour of slightly more avant arrangements. The old Coldplay still shine through (see tracks like "Violet Hill" and the title song) but even their classic sound feels more muscular and confident. The band's new flourishes, cosmetic and self-conscious as they may be, are enough to make Viva La Vida a welcome break from the old routine--Danny McKenna

The album comprises 10 brand new tracks, recorded in London, Barcelona and New York with producers Brian Eno and Markus Dravs. "Viva La Vida" follows the hugely successful album "X&Y", which has sold 10 million copies since its release in 2005.

Sad, So Very Very Sad!1
I, Like a complete idiot, bought coldplays Viva based on the first three
albums which I liked very much. I think they are great, but Chris Martin
felt he needed to go in a different direction because of his "Critics"
Hey Chris, you don't please your critics, you please your FANS! I should write to you and ask for a refund! I feel as if I threw my money into the toilet! I can't even give the cd away, I've tried. Go away for a couple of years and then try again!
Same for REM and Madonna's newest, SAD SO VERY SAD!!!!

I don't know if this band is trying to make a political statement, however I love George Bush and respect everything he has done for the United States. He is an American hero regardless of what the liberal hippies think. Great CD though!!!!
Between a Rock and Hard Place3
As a musician, I respect the right of another musician to write whatever kind of music he wants. As a fan, I want to ask Chris Martin of Coldplay, "What's up with 'Viva la Vida'?" For my money, this album can only measure up to the band's previous albums when listened to in a vacuum. When I first popped it in the player, I was underwhelmed. But not wanting to feel disappointed about a Coldplay album, I listened the heck out of it for a week straight. By the end of the week, I had my favorites, and there was only one song ("42"--it's as boring and formulaic a Coldplay song as they've written to date) that I wouldn't even listen to.
The key to this "coming of fanhood" tale is that for a solid week, I listened to NOTHING other than this album. Without making this a review about an entirely different band's album, let me pick up at the end of the aforementioned week. My wife bought me a copy of "Consolers Of The Lonely"--the sophomore release from Jack White's side band, The Raconteurs. THIS is an album that does not need a vacuum within which to be enjoyed. I've been devouring this album ever since I first put it in my player two weeks ago, and now, having been removed from the Coldplay haze, I look down at "Viva la Vida" sitting on the console of my vehicle and think, "Man, what a boring album." To be sure, The Raconteurs are one of only a precious few bands that could've achieved this effect, but all in all, my impression of Coldplay's latest release is that it is forgettable. I hear tracks from previous albums on the radio and think, "I miss THAT Coldplay."
Perhaps this is a little melodramatic for some, but as a seasoned musician AND die-hard Coldplay fan who was as giddy and stupid as anybody else walking through the ticket turnstyles during their "X&Y" tour, my ultimate take is 3 stars. It's slightly better overall than "Parachutes," but pales in comparison to "Rush of Blood" and "X&Y." Coldplay have done better, and I have faith will do better again.
